Corn Variety Block Trial Check-in 🌽This one is a side-by-side look at Pioneer Seeds P07147PCE vs. DEKALB Asgrow Ohio 56-26 RIB. As we get closer to the finish line, I’ve been wanting to get back here to see what the corn was looking like. The Dekalb has 18 rows around the cob, while the Pioneer is only 14 around. But the Pioneer is making up for some of those fewer rows with noticeably bigger kernels and a larger ear.When you put the two ears next to each other, the difference in size is pretty obvious.The plants have been interesting to watch too. The Pioneer is holding its leaves a little better right now, while the Dekalb has a little more leaf dieback and tar spot pressure. Both were sprayed with fungicide in late July.The Pioneer is also a white cob variety, which is something we’ve struggled with in the past when it comes to getting all the kernels off the cob. We’ve been told there have been some improvements there, so that will be another thing I’ll be watching when we get to harvest.That’s what makes these trials so interesting. One hybrid has more rows around the cob, while the other has bigger kernels and a larger ear.Now we just have to see how all of those differences translate to the yield monitor. 🌽#maranathaacres #corn #testplot #pioneerseeds #dekalb #agriculture
Here’s a quick update on one of our split-planter trials this year. 🌽As we get closer to the finish line, I’ve been curious to check a few different spots throughout the farm and see how this side-by-sides is looking.The Fs InVISION 5947T RIB has some crazy-big kernels. I figured they were 18-around ears but after counting, they were actually only 14 around.The Dekalb 5982 RIB had 18 kernels around and are noticeably smaller at this point, but having more kernels around the cob could potentially make up for some of that size difference.Both hybrids are also pretty close when it comes to kernels long.That’s what makes this trial so interesting: heavy kernels vs. more kernels.The plants can look pretty similar from the road, but once you start pulling ears and counting kernels, you can see some pretty significant differences.It’ll be interesting to see how these two finish out and, ultimately, which one converts those differences into more yield. 🌽#maranathaacres #corn #corntrial #splitplanter #agriculture #farming #cornyield #fsinvision #dekalb

We had the opportunity today to attend Pioneer Seeds’ Century of Innovation event at the Pioneer Breeding Station in Napoleon, Ohio with over 360 growers and dealers. 🌽It was really cool to see how far corn and soybean genetics have come over the past 50–100 years. Seeing those early varieties of corn and soybeans in person and learning how each variety/hybrid began was really neat.
